Improve Driver Performance

Better drivers create better fleets

Drivers influence almost every aspect of fleet performance.

Fuel consumption, vehicle wear, road safety, maintenance costs and customer satisfaction are all affected by the way a vehicle is driven.

The challenge is not collecting more vehicle data.

The challenge is transforming vehicle data into meaningful driver insights that help drivers improve their performance without increasing administrative workload.

Why driver behaviour matters

Even small improvements in driving style can have a significant impact across an entire fleet.

Improved driver behaviour can help to:

  • Reduce fuel consumption
  • Improve road safety
  • Reduce tyre wear
  • Reduce brake wear
  • Extend vehicle lifetime
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Reduce CO₂ emissions
  • Improve driver comfort
  • Increase fleet profitability

The greatest improvements are achieved when drivers receive objective feedback instead of subjective opinions.

How Squarell helps

Squarell continuously analyses driver behaviour using harmonised vehicle information collected directly from the vehicle networks.

Instead of relying on isolated events, Squarell combines driver actions, vehicle operation and trip performance into meaningful Driver Performance information.

Fleet operators receive objective information that supports coaching, while drivers receive clear feedback that helps them improve every journey.

Building the Solution

The Improve Driver Behaviour Challenge is supported by the Driver Performance Solution, which combines several specialised Parameter Groups.

Driver Behavior (DRB)

Understand how the vehicle is being driven.

Typical information includes:

  • Harsh acceleration
  • Harsh braking
  • Excessive cornering
  • Excessive idling
  • Cruise Control usage
  • Driving style trends

Driver Controls (DRC)

Monitor how the driver operates the vehicle.

Typical information includes:

  • Accelerator pedal usage
  • Brake pedal activity
  • Clutch operation
  • Cruise Control operation
  • PTO operation
  • Driver control inputs

Driver Totals (DRT)

Measure performance objectively.

Typical information includes:

  • Total idle time
  • Number of harsh braking events
  • Number of harsh acceleration events
  • Total Cruise Control usage
  • Driving statistics
  • Threshold exceedance counters

Driver Feedback (DRF)

Provide immediate coaching while driving.

The Driver Feedback Parameter Group can be used by:

  • the physical Driver Awareness Panel (DAP) with LEDs and buzzer
  • a telematics provider’s own tablet or mobile application

Real-time feedback allows drivers to adjust their behaviour immediately instead of waiting until the end of the trip.

Driver Score (DRS)

Summarise every trip.

At the end of each journey the Driver Score provides a simple performance summary.

Instead of analysing dozens of parameters, drivers and fleet managers receive an easy-to-understand assessment that encourages continuous improvement.

Driver Histograms (DHIS)

Identify long-term driving patterns.

Histograms reveal behavioural trends that are difficult to recognise from individual trips, helping fleet managers evaluate training programmes and compare performance across the fleet.

Measurable business value

Fleet operators using the Driver Performance Solution benefit from:

  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Improved road safety
  • Reduced tyre wear
  • Reduced brake wear
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • More consistent driving behaviour
  • Objective driver coaching
  • Better fleet performance

Field experience with the Squarell Driver Awareness concept has shown average fuel savings of approximately 14%, while also improving driver awareness and driving consistency.

Why Squarell?

Many telematics systems simply record driving events.

Squarell goes a step further by transforming harmonised vehicle information into meaningful Driver Performance insights.

The combination of Driver Behaviour, Driver Controls, Driver Totals, Driver Feedback, Driver Score and Driver Histograms provides a complete and objective view of driver performance.

Whether feedback is delivered through the physical Driver Awareness Panel or a telematics provider’s own application, the same harmonised information can be used to improve every journey.
