ENVIRON+

Remote intelligence for equipment in harsh environments

The Squarell ENVIRON+ is a rugged, connected data collection device for generators, pumps, compressors and other mobile or stationary equipment operating in demanding outdoor environments.

Based on the proven technology of the REMOTE+, ENVIRON+ combines equipment data, sensor inputs, accurate location, Bluetooth and mobile communication in a waterproof enclosure. It provides remote insight into the status, operation and condition of valuable equipment, even when it is installed far away from the office, workshop or service organisation.

ENVIRON+ turns machines and field equipment into connected assets, providing the information needed to improve availability, plan maintenance, monitor fuel levels and respond to faults before they result in downtime.

The harsh-environment REMOTE+

REMOTE+ is designed primarily for installation inside vehicles. ENVIRON+ brings the same processing power, communication capabilities and data intelligence to equipment exposed to dust, moisture, vibration and changing weather conditions.

Its rugged IP67 housing and waterproof connectors make it suitable for permanent outdoor installation on equipment such as:

  • Generator sets
  • Water and industrial pumps
  • Compressors
  • Mobile lighting towers
  • Construction and agricultural equipment
  • Temporary power installations
  • Tank and fuel systems
  • Remote service equipment
  • Other powered or unpowered field assets.

“ENVIRON+ can be used on both mobile and stationary installations.”

More than equipment tracking

A conventional asset tracker mainly reports location, movement and operating hours. ENVIRON+ can also collect information directly from the equipment controller, CAN network and connected sensors.

Depending on the installation and available data, ENVIRON+ can provide information about:

  • Equipment location and movement
  • Engine operating hours
  • Running, stopped and standby status
  • Fuel level and fuel consumption
  • Battery and supply voltage
  • Engine speed, load and temperature
  • Oil pressure and coolant temperature
  • Generator output and operating condition
  • Pump status, pressure or flow
  • Service intervals
  • Active warnings and diagnostic faults
  • External sensors, switches and alarm contacts.

This creates a complete remote view of both the location and technical condition of the equipment.

Built-in non-intrusive CAN connection

ENVIRON+ includes an integrated CANcliQ for reading CAN data without making an electrical connection to the CAN wires. The original wiring remains intact and the CAN network is not electrically loaded by the data connection.

This is particularly useful for leased equipment, warranty-sensitive installations and machines where cutting, stripping or modifying the original wiring is undesirable.

In addition to the integrated CANcliQ, ENVIRON+ provides one CAN connection for applications where a direct connection is preferred or required.

Squarell can interpret and harmonise the available equipment data so that information from different brands, engine controllers and machine types can be delivered in a consistent format.

Connections for equipment and sensors

ENVIRON+ provides a practical selection of interfaces for connecting equipment controllers, sensors and Squarell accessories:

  • One integrated non-intrusive CANcliQ
  • One CAN bus connection
  • Two SFD ports
  • One analogue input
  • One 1-Wire connection
  • One RS232 port.

These connections make it possible to combine information from the machine’s electronic control system with external measurements and status signals.

The analogue input can, for example, be used for a fuel-level sensor, pressure sensor or battery measurement. The 1-Wire connection can support temperature sensors, while RS232 can be used to communicate with a generator controller, display, meter or other serial device.

The two SFD ports provide connectivity for Squarell modules, accessories and application-specific extensions.

Fuel-level and operational monitoring

For remotely installed generators and other fuel-powered equipment, an empty tank can cause unnecessary downtime and expensive emergency service visits.

ENVIRON+ can monitor fuel level through the equipment controller, CAN network or an external sensor. When the fuel level approaches a configured limit, the device can send a warning so that refuelling can be planned before the equipment stops.

Fuel monitoring can also be used to identify:

  • Unexpectedly high fuel consumption
  • Sudden changes in tank level
  • Possible leakage or fuel theft
  • Refuelling events
  • Fuel usage in relation to operating hours and load.

The available functions depend on the equipment data and sensors connected to ENVIRON+.

“Bluetooth makes it possible to extend the installation without adding wiring to every sensor or accessory.”

Communication even when the equipment is switched off

ENVIRON+ includes an internal backup battery. This allows the device to send essential messages when the equipment is switched off or when its external power supply is interrupted.

The backup battery can support functions such as:

  • Sending a low-fuel warning after the equipment stops
  • Reporting a loss of external power
  • Transmitting the last known location
  • Reporting unexpected movement or possible tampering
  • Sending periodic status or location heartbeat messages
  • Maintaining essential communication while the equipment is inactive.
The operating time on the internal battery depends on the configured reporting interval, sensor use, network conditions and battery capacity

Bluetooth connectivity

Bluetooth is available on board for communication with nearby sensors, accessories and identification beacons.

Depending on the application, Bluetooth can be used for:

  • Connecting wireless temperature or condition sensors
  • Identifying nearby equipment or service personnel
  • Local installation and service functions
  • Exchanging data with a tablet or mobile application
  • Detecting compatible Bluetooth beacons.

Bluetooth makes it possible to extend the installation without adding wiring to every sensor or accessory.

Location and mobile communication

The integrated GPS/GNSS receiver provides accurate location information for both mobile and stationary assets. Movement detection can be used to identify relocation, unauthorised use or theft.

The integrated mobile modem allows data, warnings and diagnostic information to be transmitted to a server or fleet application. Messages can be sent:

  • At configured time intervals
  • When the equipment starts or stops
  • When movement is detected
  • When a measured value crosses a limit
  • When a warning or diagnostic fault occurs
  • Following a remote request.

This event-based communication limits unnecessary data traffic while ensuring that important changes are reported immediately.

Improve uptime and service planning

ENVIRON+ gives operators and service organisations remote access to the information required to maintain equipment efficiently.

Operating hours, temperatures, loads, warnings and diagnostic information can be used to:

  • Plan maintenance based on actual usage
  • Detect developing problems at an early stage
  • Reduce unnecessary inspection visits
  • Prepare technicians before travelling to the equipment
  • Bring the correct parts and tools on the first visit
  • Prevent downtime caused by an empty fuel tank
  • Verify that equipment is operating within the required limits.

“Remote diagnostics can be particularly valuable when equipment is installed at unmanned or difficult-to-reach locations.”

Designed for outdoor installation

ENVIRON+ is enclosed in a rugged IP67 housing with waterproof connectors. It is designed for installations exposed to dust, rain, moisture, vibration and demanding working conditions.

The enclosure material complies with UL 94 V-0 flame-retardancy requirements. Service connections remain accessible through sealed waterproof caps, allowing maintenance to be performed without compromising normal environmental protection.

Button-activated LEDs provide status information during installation and service, including:

  • Power status
  • Mobile network connection
  • Software operation
  • Bluetooth status.

One device for a wide range of field equipment

ENVIRON+ combines the capabilities of an advanced telematics device, equipment data interface, remote diagnostic unit and sensor gateway in one rugged product.

It provides the connection between field equipment and the applications used to manage operations, fuel supply, maintenance and service.

With Squarell ENVIRON+, organisations know not only where their equipment is, but also whether it is operating correctly, when it requires attention and what needs to be done to keep it running.

CAN FD Ready

Vehicle networks are evolving from Classical CAN towards CAN FD.

The Squarell Dual CAN FD Interface extends the [SOLID+ / REMOTE+ / ENVIRON+] with two independent CAN FD interfaces supporting data rates up to 8 Mbit/s and messages with up to 64 bytes of data.

Relevant CAN FD messages are filtered and processed by the interface before the selected information is transferred through the Squarell SFD connection.
