The Squarell Trailer Box is a rugged, brand-independent data collection device developed specifically for trailers and semi-trailers. It combines accurate location tracking with access to the trailer’s electronic systems, sensors and connected equipment.
While the electronics and data-processing capabilities are based on the proven REMOTE+, the Trailer Box has a waterproof housing, trailer-specific connections and an optional internal battery supply. This makes it suitable for permanent installation underneath or on the chassis of a trailer.
The Trailer Box does more than report where a trailer is. It can provide information about the trailer’s brakes, chassis, tyres, cargo conditions, diagnostic status and actual usage. Bluetooth can also be used to identify which truck is pulling the trailer..
More than trailer tracking
A conventional trailer tracker mainly provides location and movement information. The Trailer Box combines this information with data obtained directly from the trailer and its connected systems.
Depending on the installation and selected Parameter Groups, the Trailer Box can provide:
- Accurate trailer location and movement information
- The location where the trailer was connected or disconnected
- Detection of unexpected movement or possible tampering
- Identification of the truck pulling the trailer
- Trailer brake, chassis and diagnostic information
- Tyre pressure and temperature information from compatible TPMS sensors
- Cargo and refrigeration-unit information
- Temperature measurements and door status
- Driving conditions, trailer dynamics and impact events.This provides fleet operators, trailer rental companies and logistics service providers with a much more complete understanding of how each trailer is being used.

Know which truck is pulling the trailer
The built-in Bluetooth receiver can detect a beacon installed in the truck. This allows the Trailer Box to identify the combination of truck and trailer without requiring a wired connection between the two devices.
This is particularly valuable for rental fleets, frequently changing truck-trailer combinations and road trains with multiple trailers. Bluetooth can also be used to receive information from compatible wireless sensors, including TPMS devices.
Direct access to trailer data
The Trailer Box can be connected to the trailer CAN network to collect information from systems using ISO 11992. Squarell’s non-intrusive CAN technology allows the data connection to be made without interrupting or electrically loading the original point-to-point CAN network.
Trailer data can be made available through dedicated Parameter Groups, including:
- Brakes
- Cargo
- Chassis
- Diagnostics
- Drive
- TPMS
- Usage.

Connections for sensors and auxiliary equipment
Three multifunction connectors make it possible to adapt the Trailer Box to the required application. Depending on the configuration, these connections can be used for:
- CAN, including connection to the trailer CAN network
- RS232, for example for communication with a refrigeration unit
- 1-Wire temperature sensors
- SFD accessories, such as a Power Output Module
- An analogue input, for example for a door contact.
This makes the Trailer Box suitable for monitoring not only the trailer itself, but also the cargo environment and auxiliary equipment.
Designed for quick installation
The Trailer Box is designed to minimise installation time. A short power extension cable and trailer-specific connection method allow it to be installed without extensive changes to the existing wiring.
During installation, Squarell’s Checkerbox can be used to verify the connection and retrieve available chassis and diagnostic information. This confirms immediately that the required trailer data is accessible before the vehicle leaves the workshop..

Communication and positioning
The Trailer Box has an integrated 4G modem with 2G fallback and can transmit data using the MQTT protocol. Its integrated GPS/GNSS receiver provides accurate and compact location information for display on a map.
The device can report on intervals, after movement or following a configured event. This allows communication frequency and data usage to be matched to the application.
Monitoring when the trailer is disconnected
One or two optional internal battery packs allow the Trailer Box to remain active when the trailer is disconnected from the truck’s power supply.
The batteries can be used for:
- Periodic location heartbeat messages
- Detection of unexpected trailer movement
- Tamper warnings
- Reporting the last known disconnection location
- Maintaining essential monitoring while the trailer is parked.
The operating time depends on the selected reporting interval, movement detection settings and installed battery capacity.
Integrated motion and impact detection
An integrated G-force sensor can detect movement, shocks and unusual dynamic events. This information can be used for safety monitoring, usage analysis and event recording.
Combined with trailer, location and sensor data, it becomes possible to distinguish normal operation from exceptional events such as an impact, harsh manoeuvre or unexpected movement.
Built for demanding trailer environments
The Trailer Box is enclosed in a rugged IP67 housing with IP67 connectors, providing protection against dust, rain and water exposure. The enclosure material complies with UL 94 V-0 flame-retardancy requirements.
The SIM card and USB service connection remain accessible through sealed waterproof caps. A button-activated LED panel provides installation and service information without requiring the enclosure to be opened.
The LEDs indicate:
- Power status
- Modem connection
- Software operation
- Bluetooth status.
