Event Data Recorder SQ (EDRS)
Event Data Recorder SQ (EDRS)
Capture the moments that matter
Capture the moments that matter
Understanding what happened before and after an incident requires more than a single event notification.
The Squarell Event Data Recorder (EDR) captures vehicle information during the critical seconds immediately before and after an incident, allowing fleet operators to reconstruct the sequence of events.

Intelligent Incident Recording for Commercial Vehicles
Unlike continuous vehicle monitoring, the EDR only records information when a configurable trigger is detected, creating a compact yet highly valuable incident record.
The current Squarell Event Data Recorder SQ is designed as an intelligent Incident Recorder for commercial vehicle applications. It is not intended to comply with international passenger car EDR regulations. A next-generation Squarell EDR platform, designed to support future international EDR requirements, is currently under development.
Specifications
Name: Event Data Recorder SQ
Header: $EDRpre1, $EDRpost1
Subscription: Yes
Solution: Compliance
Trigger: On Incident
Output port: Selectable
Typical Applications
The Event Data Recorder SQ supports applications such as:
- Incident reconstruction
- Fleet safety analysis
- Driver coaching
- Insurance support
- Accident investigation
- Harsh braking analysis
- Harsh acceleration analysis
- Risk management
- Internal safety investigations
- Fleet compliance reporting
How it works
The Event Data Recorder continuously maintains a rolling memory buffer.
When an incident trigger is detected, the buffered information from before the event is preserved and recording automatically continues after the event.
This creates a complete incident timeline without continuously storing large amounts of operational data.
Typical recording:
Up to 30 seconds before the incident
Up to 30 seconds after the incident
The recording duration is fully configurable.

Incident Triggers
An event can be recorded when one or more configurable thresholds are exceeded.
Typical trigger conditions include:
- Excessive deceleration
- Excessive acceleration
- High G-force impact (REMOTE+ and ENVIRON+)
- Vehicle speed above configurable threshold
- Combined speed and acceleration conditions
This allows the Event Data Recorder to capture not only collisions, but also significant driving events such as harsh braking or aggressive acceleration.
Key Parameters
Before the Incident
The pre-event recording provides insight into the driver’s actions and the vehicle condition leading up to the incident.
Typical parameters include:
Vehicle Dynamics
- Vehicle speed
- Longitudinal acceleration / deceleration
- G-force (REMOTE+, ENVIRON+)
- Steering angle
- Current gear
Driver Actions
- Accelerator pedal position
- Brake switch
- Clutch switch
- Cruise Control status
Vehicle Safety Systems
- ABS status
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Park brake status
Vehicle Lighting
- Hazard lights
- Left indicator
- Right indicator
- Main headlights
- High beam
- Front wipers
Driver Warnings
- Airbag warning lamp
- Seat belt warning lamp
After the Incident
The post-event recording shows how the vehicle and driver responded immediately after the event.
Typical parameters include:
- Vehicle speed
- Accelerator pedal position
- Brake switch
- Clutch switch
- Cruise Control
- Steering angle
- Current gear
- ABS
- Stability Control
- G-force (REMOTE+, ENVIRON+)
- Vehicle movement status
- Ignition status (OEM dependent)
The complete Parameter Group and parameter definitions are available to Squarell partners.
Flexible Configuration
The Event Data Recorder SQ can be configured for different vehicle types and applications.
Typical configuration options include:
- Pre-event recording duration
- Post-event recording duration
- Minimum vehicle speed
- Acceleration threshold
- Deceleration threshold
- G-force threshold
- Selectable output ports
- Remote configuration through ExpertView
Example Visualisation
The recorded data can be visualised as a timeline showing vehicle behaviour before, during and after an incident.
Typical visualisations include:
Vehicle speed profile
Brake activity
Accelerator position
Steering angle
G-force profile
Driver inputs
Vehicle safety system activation

Business Value
The Event Data Recorder SQ helps fleet operators to:
- reconstruct incidents objectively
- improve fleet safety
- reduce investigation time
- support insurance claims
- improve driver coaching
- identify high-risk driving behaviour
- reduce operational risk
- support continuous safety improvement
Why Squarell?
Unlike conventional event notifications, the Squarell Event Data Recorder records the complete operational context surrounding an incident.
By combining vehicle dynamics, driver inputs and safety system information into one harmonised Parameter Group, fleet applications receive a structured incident record that is independent of vehicle manufacturer.
For REMOTE+ and ENVIRON+, the integrated G-sensor extends the Event Data Recorder with crash detection capabilities, enabling impact-triggered recordings in addition to driver behaviour events.
