Transmission Data (TRA)

Understand how power is transferred to the road

The transmission has a major influence on vehicle performance, fuel efficiency and drivability.

The Squarell Transmission Data Parameter Group provides insight into transmission condition, gear selection and operating behaviour. By combining mechanical condition data with information about how the transmission is being used, fleet applications can monitor both transmission health and drivetrain efficiency.

Across different vehicle manufacturers, this information is converted into one harmonised Parameter Group.

Typical Applications

The Transmission Data Parameter Group supports applications such as:

  • Transmission condition monitoring
  • Predictive maintenance
  • Gear selection analysis
  • Drivetrain efficiency monitoring
  • Driver performance analysis
  • Workshop diagnostics
  • Transmission temperature monitoring
  • Fleet performance dashboards
  • Fuel efficiency applications

Key Parameters

Transmission Condition

Monitor the mechanical and thermal condition of the transmission.

Typical parameters include:

  • Transmission Oil Level
  • Transmission Oil Pressure
  • Transmission Oil Temperature
  • Transmission Warning Status
  • Transmission Operating Hours

Abnormal oil pressure, level or temperature can provide an early indication of developing transmission problems.

Gear Selection

Understand how the transmission operates during actual vehicle use.

Typical parameters include:

  • Current Gear
  • Selected / Requested Gear
  • Reverse / Neutral / Drive Status
  • Highest Available Gear
  • Gear Shift in Progress
  • Total Gear Changes

This information can help determine whether the transmission is selecting appropriate gears for the operating conditions.

Drivetrain Operation

Monitor how power is transferred through the transmission.

Depending on vehicle availability, useful parameters include:

  • Transmission Input Speed
  • Transmission Output Speed
  • Transmission Torque
  • Torque Converter Lock-up Status
  • Clutch Status
  • Clutch Slip
  • Transmission Mode — Automatic / Manual

These values provide additional insight into transmission behaviour and drivetrain efficiency.

Gear Usage

Individual values become even more useful when accumulated over time.

Typical parameters include:

  • Histogram Gear vs Time
  • Time per Gear
  • Distance per Gear
  • Number of Gear Changes
  • Time in Neutral
  • Time in Reverse
  • Manual versus Automatic Mode Usage

This can reveal operating patterns that are difficult to recognise from instantaneous transmission data alone.

The complete Parameter Group and parameter definitions are available to Squarell partners.

Visualisation

Transmission information can be visualised as a combination of live operating values and historical usage.

A Gear vs Time histogram provides an immediate view of how the gearbox is being used, while oil temperature, gear selection and input/output speed can be plotted over time to investigate abnormal operating conditions.

Combined with Engine Data, the information can also show whether the complete drivetrain is operating efficiently.

Business Value

The Transmission Data Parameter Group helps fleet operators to:

  • detect abnormal transmission conditions
  • prevent overheating
  • support predictive maintenance
  • improve workshop diagnostics
  • analyse gear selection
  • identify excessive gear changing
  • improve drivetrain efficiency
  • support economical driving
  • reduce transmission wear
  • increase vehicle availability

Why Squarell?

Transmission technology differs considerably between vehicle manufacturers. Automated manual transmissions, conventional automatic transmissions and other drivetrain configurations all provide information in different ways.

Squarell interprets this manufacturer-specific information inside the IVMS and converts the available parameters into one consistent Transmission Data Parameter Group.

Fleet applications can therefore work with harmonised transmission information instead of manufacturer-specific CAN messages.
