Vehicle Histograms (VHIS)

Understand how your vehicles are being operated

he Vehicle Histograms Parameter Group analyses how the vehicle and its powertrain are used throughout every journey.

Instead of transmitting thousands of individual measurements, the Squarell IVMS continuously collects statistical information about vehicle speed, engine speed, engine torque and retarder usage. The result is a compact operational profile that reveals how the vehicle has actually been operated during the reporting period.

Vehicle Histograms help fleet operators understand vehicle utilization, compare operating conditions and optimize technical performance across the fleet.

Statistics tell the story behind every vehicle.

How does it work?

During every configurable reporting period (typically 10 minutes), the IVMS measures how long important vehicle parameters remain within predefined operating ranges.

Instead of storing thousands of individual measurements, Squarell creates compact histogram messages containing:

  • Time spent in each operating range
  • Fuel consumed in each operating range
  • Distance travelled in each operating range

After transmission the counters are automatically reset and a new measurement cycle begins.

Key Parameters

Each Parameters output in Time, Distance & Fuel

Speed in 4 ranges from 0 km/h . . .  81+ km/h

Engine Speed in 20 ranges from 0 RPM . . .  8000 RPM

Engine Greenspot in 10 ranges

Torque in 10 ranges from 0% . . .  100%

Retarder Torque in 5 ranges from 0% . . .  100%

RPM vs Torque in 10 ranges

The remote-FMS Parameter Group generates 3 messages:

$VHIS-Time1: Set with seconds counted during each range

$VHIS-Fuel1: Set with mLiters counted during each range

$VHIS-Distance1: Set with meters counted during each range

Normally all the messages will be send every 10 minutes, after which the counters are reset.

Business Value

The Vehicle Histograms Parameter Group converts continuous vehicle measurements into compact statistical operating profiles.

Instead of analyzing millions of CAN messages, fleet managers receive meaningful distributions showing how engines, transmissions and braking systems are actually being used.

These insights support vehicle selection, maintenance planning, powertrain optimization and long-term fleet efficiency while significantly reducing communication bandwidth.

Why Squarell?

Most telematics systems provide only instantaneous vehicle values.

Squarell analyses vehicle operation inside the IVMS and generates statistical operating profiles before transmission.

The result is richer technical insight with far less communication traffic, enabling fleet operators to optimize vehicle performance rather than simply monitoring current operating conditions.
