Technology and Data FAQ’s
CAN bus data is the information that electronic devices exchange with each other. There are usually multiple CAN bus networks in a vehicle, from which Squarell can read data.
There are several ways to save fuel. Squarell’s Driver Awareness Panel (DAP) is equipped with a smart algorithm that helps the driver drive more efficiently.
Servers communicate with each other via APIs, allowing them to request or send data to one another.
Fully reading out a vehicle depends on the requirements. Many users are satisfied with only 10 parameters. Customers who also want technical data for, for example, maintenance request many more parameters.
Data harvested by Squarell from vehicle networks such as the CAN bus, the FMS CAN bus, or OBD is processed in the Squarell device and, depending on customer requirements, transmitted via:
-
RS232,
-
the CAN bus,
-
the modem, or
-
Bluetooth.
In addition to standard FMS data—mainly offered by hardware suppliers for logistics applications—Squarell also provides technical data for maintenance, warning lights, error codes, environmental data, tachograph data, and much more.
Vehicle manufacturers typically provide five standard tell-tales, or real-time alerts. Squarell additionally provides more than 20 advanced tell-tales in a data set.
Installation, Support and Malfunctions FAQ’s
A vehicle interface is connected to the vehicle’s wiring using wires and sensors. It is advisable to leave the installation of vehicle electronics to a professional installer, as improper installation can cause damage to the vehicle.
If an IVMS device needs to be installed in another vehicle, it is important to check how old the device is and whether it is still under warranty. A new wiring harness is always required.
Due to the risk of damaging wiring or causing short circuits, it is necessary for a vehicle electronics technician to install a Squarell device in a vehicle.
Squarell supports all major vehicle brands. Because vehicle networks can differ by model and year of manufacture, it is advisable to consult Squarell’s Vehicle Support List.
There can be many reasons why no data is received from a vehicle. The three main reasons are:
-
the device is incorrectly connected,
-
incorrect software is installed on the device,
-
the modem or server settings are incorrect.
Almost all information about Squarell devices is included in ExpertView2. Using the iControl program or via a FOTA connection, a device can be updated with the latest changes to software, firmware, or the DCF.
The Telematics Service Provider (TSP) is the first designated organization to resolve issues related to a device. If there are data-related problems, the TSP contacts Squarell.
If a device is offline, the vehicle may not be driving or there may be a wiring defect. If the LEDs indicate normal operation but no data is sent to the server, there may be issues with the SIM card.
Data Management, Security & Commerce FAQ’s
The data obtained from a vehicle is always transmitted to a server via a modem. The server usually runs a visualization program to make the data visible. Data can often be exported from the server via an API.
Squarell data sets are available on a subscription basis. A subscription has a minimum term of one year and is automatically renewed until cancellation.
In principle, all data is stored on the customer’s server. Although Squarell has its own server, only anonymized test data is stored at Squarell.
Before rolling out to an entire fleet, an assessment is conducted to determine how many vehicles can be supported. This is followed by a virtual proof of concept (PoC), in which all steps—from data harvesting to data processing—are carried out in a controlled manner.
Squarell devices are known worldwide for their robustness, long lifespan, and quality. The standard warranty is two years. Our engineers support the TSP with technical issues and questions from their customers, the fleet owners.
Manuals and technical information are available to TSPs via our support portal.
Customer examples and case studies are available on the Squarell website.
